Materials: stainless steel and bronze

In 2005 I was commissioned to create a courtyard to include sculptures and seating for the new County Hall in Ruthin, North Wales. I made a 6 metre high apple in stainless steel and bronze. The core of the sculpture is made of stainless steel, bronze and glass. Along the edging of the apple profile are bronze castings which refer to the histories of the County. The images for the bronze edging were sourced through research and discussions with interested groups. The images are grouped geographically on the bronze and refer to a range of subjects such as local spring water providing the source for Ruthin beer, to the printing of the first translation of the Bible into Welsh. The images are not all immediately obvious, requiring the audience to question. Some of the images are from hear-say, but these local anecdotes, true or not, have entered the culture and are now part of the interpretation.
