Materials: stainless steel,
bronze, Bings shale

The history of the shale oil
industry dominates the local
heritage. The base of the
sculpture is made of shale
material and within it lies a collection of bronze castings of tools and objects related to the shale oil industry and associated trades. The Bings, spoil heaps from the mining of the shale oil, are becoming naturalised by wildlife and growth of plants and trees. Rosebay Willowherb, Wild garlic and Hawthorn are represented here as symbols of regeneration and future growth of the area.
